The Seed Community Food Hub Committee

We believe…

The Seed Community Food Hub Committee believes in creating a space to bring people together with food to improve health, community, access and advocacy efforts. The vision for The Seed Community Food Hub is based on three years of research with the Research Shop at the University of Guelph, which examined the challenges current emergency food providers and users face in Guelph and Wellington. This new vision offers our community a long-term, sustainable solution to food insecurity.

What we know…

  • 39% of emergency food providers in Guelph and Wellington identified insufficient food supply, particularly in the case of nutritious and/or fresh food, as a challenge within the current system (The Research Shop, 2011)
  • 23% of survey respondents that are currently accessing emergency food in our community reported that stigma is the main barrier to service (The Research Shop, 2013)
  • 98% of respondents facing hunger and food insecurity say The Stop Community Food Centre plays an important role in helping them cope (Community Food Centres Canada)
  • 61.5% of respondents say their physical health has improved since they came to The Stop Community Food Centre (Community Food Centres Canada)

What we’re doing about it…

  • Hosting an Open Space Consultation in January 2014 for champions to provide input into the overall vision
  • Following up with a Food Charette in March 2014 to create an Action Plan
  • Developing an Action Plan to move our vision forward (to be released in Summer 2014)
